Although my co- morbidities would make any operation undertaken difficult Mr Heaton undertook my knee replacement despite this. My hospital stay was initially meant to be 24hrs but due to aforementioned issues it ended up being 6 days but Mr Heaton still confident all would be well. This encouragement spurred me on. Was discharged on an A frame which helped for the first week when I then transferred to a rollator. This allowed me to go out for short walks to my local shop with a seat to rest on when necessary and which also became a shopping trolley when seat not required. By week 3 I transferred to elbow crutches to move a bit quicker while still getting exercise and also visited physio. She was very surprised at the movement I had in my knee at that point given my age of 72 yrs and several other health issues. By week 4 I was using 1walking stick then when visiting physio on week 5 I had no walking aids at all and although 1 more session was agreed for early in the new year it was felt it may not be required. On my follow up appointment with Mr Heaton after 6 weeks post op I was shown the before and after x-rays of my knee. It was remarkable seeing the difference where initially my knee was bone on bone and caused great difficulty with walking whereas now there was a fairly large gap and the ability to move the knee without causing pain. Mr Heaton agreed the operation, despite several other health issues, had been a total success in a very short space of time so discharged me with advice to get back in touch if any problems do arise. I know that given time my other knee will require the same treatment but would approach that operation with much more confidence, especially if this was also being operated on by Mr Heaton. Can’t sing his praises more highly and would certainly recommend Mr Heaton and his skills to anyone else needing his specialised input as this operation has certainly put a step back into this 72 year old lady! Thank you so much.

Mr Heaton has a great bedside manner & a good sense of humour. He performed keyhole surgery on my knee and waiting for the anaesthetic to be administered the nurse had to leave the room. Mr Heaton and colleague sat with me and asked what music I'd like to hear. As I was given the anaesthetic I drifted off listening to Dido. Everyone including physio are amazed at my recovery. My whole experience from start to finish has been amazing. In the words of Dido "I want to thank you" and the whole team who cared for me at Grantham Hospital on 26th Oct 23. Keep up the good work.

My osteo arthritis in my hip was severe causing pain which affected physical activity, exercise, sleep and general quality of life. After inspection of X-rays I was immediately put on the list for a hip replacement which took place under three months later. The operation was a success, but wiring had to be placed round the femur which had cracked at the neck. Since then my recovery has proceeded well, and seven weeks after the operation I am walking around the house without a crutch, and going for walks of up to two miles using one crutch. Pain has largely gone and improvement is noticeable daily. I must also commend the prompt treatment when attending the fracture clinic.

Following an ACL and meniscus cartilage tear, I anticipated knee surgery and was sceptical when Mr Heaton recommended 6 months of physio before further review. Like many patients, I deferred to Dr Google and when Mr Heaton explained that the Western European approach to this condition differs from that in Australasia, I thought that this might be influenced by NHS resource limitations. Moving 6 months on, I am delighted to have been proved wrong. My rehabilitation has been extremely successful without the need for invasive surgery, and whilst my knee will never be as strong as it was I have a robust and sustainable way forward to maintain my health and agility. Whilst Mr Heaton cautioned that I should expect knee surgery at some point in the future, he supported my optimism that this might be 10 years away. Mr Heaton and his extended team all provided outstanding care and great advice. Thank you.
